Identity of the Book With the Blue Cover...

Research on what the book actually IS has been limited. After all, we don't know the Subject...or the Title...or the Author...

So what we need are clues, hints, some slip of the tongue...

This comic strip "For Better Or Worse," in which a patron asks the protagonist for a book using certain descriptions, might have something:

©1996 (Oct.20 release) Strip provided by the legendary Lynn Johnston (actually, it was a guy named James who works in design) via the For Better or For Worse website. I paid $50 for the copyright, so don't you hosers DARE copy this or anything! I paid fair and square dammit, so you should too! Now, they're cool about it, as long as you have a good idea of the date of the strip, or what the strip's storyline was aboot. Just ask under the Reprint menu option on the main webpage and go from there...

The woman requesting the book provides vital clues: 'It's about a man who meets a woman during the war.' The other clue, that she heard it mentioned on the radio, should be discarded: the patrons I've dealt with turn out to be unaware of HOW they found out about the book, and usually hide their embarassment by claiming 'friends are reading it' or 'I heard it on the radio' or 'Harlan Ellison referred to it while describing his artistic struggles against William Shatner' etc.
