Tampa Bay Buccaneers Draft Needs 2009
By Position - With UPDATES (3/6/2009)
QUARTERBACK
Just as I started writing this Draft Need preview, the Glazers upped and fired Gruden. Bit of a shocker on the timing, but when you witnessed the horrid December collapse, you just knew Chucky had somehow somewhere lost the team.
One other thing: Gruden was an idiot, especially when it came to QB talent evaluation.
After the past few years of Chucky stocking up on QBs like they were going scarce, the Bucs will most likely have a lot of gaping holes to fill. Garcia's contract is up and he's been told to look elsewhere. McCown and Griese remain, but both are question marks, and rookie Josh Johnson was all lined up as the Next Shaun King, no wait the next Chris Simms, no wait the next Bruce Gr... aw dammit!
The good news for the team is that two QB studs - McNabb and Cassel - might be on the Free Agency market. The bad news is, Cassel is hit with a Franchise tag meaning the Bucs will have to cough up a First Rounder (at least!) for him, and McNabb is also gonna cost a pretty penny.
The draft is a real question mark right now when it comes to rookie QBs: scouting has about 2-3 sure things (and even that is never a sure thing) for the First Round, and past that, well...
The Bucs' best move is stocking up with one (JUST ONE) decent rock-thrower via FA: the team's done far better with FA QBs (Brad Johnson, Garcia) than with rookies (especially under the Gruden regime). Given the gaps the Bucs have elsewhere (WR, DT, DE, S, even RB) I'd rather not cough up the First Rounder just to get Cassel: shop the market first, see what shakes loose.
From what I see of the FA market, Byron Leftwich might be a nice prospect...
ODDS: Depends on Free Agency PROJECTED ROUND: Second if FA fails, otherwise none
RUNNING BACK/FULLBACK
The pity is that the Bucs drafted a decent running back - Cadillac Williams - only to see two horrific knee injuries, one right after the other the last two seasons. This isn't good, especially not for him.
The Bucs are projecting Earnest Graham returning from his own injuries, but past that there's question marks here. Warrick Dunn came back, showed he had lost two steps since he left in 2002, and now he's gone. And Clifton James may be the Bucs' kick return sensation, but he's still a benchwarmer at the RB spot.
The Bucs will be tempted at least in the First Round with any top-10-caliber RB that slips into the middle set of picks, which does happen every draft year. A lot depends on Free Agency, as always: if the Bucs use FA for securing QBs and WRs, which is likely, then expect the 19th overall pick to be a top-notch power back... or a Defensive Tackle... or if a weakside LB slides down... or...
UPDATE: Tampa snags RB Derrick Ward from the Giants. Reliable, good ground gainer, coming from a winning franchise (w/ Super Bowl ring). Should balance well with Graham and give Williams time to heal (again). Need to draft a RB now drops to ZILCH. ZIP and NADA
ODDS: BEYOND LOW PROJECTED ROUND: None
WIDE RECEIVER

For all the problems the Bucs have figuring out who the QB and RB is going to be, it's gotten far worse at WR. We had reliable veterans Galloway and Hilliard, both performing above and beyond expectations the past 2-3 years. They're gone now. And just as Clayton was showing signs of life, he's up for Free Agency.
The good news is that 1) Clayton may be up for FA, but I doubt he'll find a decent market for himself, and 2) The Bucs have Antonio Bryant stepping up to a Pro-Bowl level performance this past season. The bad news? The Bucs tagged Bryant with a Franchise tag. It means we'll keep him barring a major trade, but it also means a good chunk of cap space gets eated for one year.
The deal is, aside from Clayton's rookie season the Bucs' recent track record of drafting WRs is rather hideous. Last season's disappearing act of touted App. State dude Dexter Jackson is currently ranking as the Bucs' worst draft pick since Kenyatta "False Start or Holding Penalty" Walker. The Bucs have done a slightly better job of securing decent WRs (McCardell, Jurevicius, Galloway, Hilliard, Bryant) through the FA/trade routes. Problem is, the Bucs may be desperate enough in the need to upgrade a poorly stocked offensive unit that a top round draft pick is gonna be used at this spot. I seriously suggest getting someone decent (AND NOT TERRELL! if the Cowboys cut him... OH GOD NO!)
UPDATE: The Bucs have indeed re-signed Clayton. While the price tag looks pretty high, it does retain continuity. If Clayton shows improvement to counter Bryant (and give the Bucs a 1-2-3 combo with TE Winslow), it will be worth it. But the Bucs still need a serious down-the-field rocket...

ODDS: High PROJECTED ROUND: First to Third
TIGHT END
The Bucs are geniunely set at Tight End, albeit with a questionable character (Stevens) and an oft-injured borderline stud (Smith). Gilmore is good to go, one hopes. It just depends on how Free Agency is going to impact (we losing anyone here?).
UPDATE: Stevens is a Free Agent and was expected to find another team (the Bucs aren't asking him back by the looks of it). Instead, the Bucs traded away this year's Second Rounder and next year's Fifth for Cleveland's Kellen Winslow. That he's a talented receiving-type TE is without question. On-field, defenses are gonna need to keep a guy (or three) on him. Off-field, however, he's earned a rep (to his defense, it's from dealing with one of the worst front offices outside of Detroit). Drafting a TE is still beyond low: it's just we used a draft pick to snag one already.
ODDS: Beyond Low PROJECTED ROUND: None
OFFENSIVE TACKLE
The offensive line wasn't as impressive as they were the previous year, but they also weren't as disastrous as previous years. There is a question on if Penn is still up to being the anchor, or if Trueblood can cut back on some of the dumbass plays, but otherwise the Bucs are solid here. Only a surefire starting OT should get drafted if one drops to the Bucs in the First Round... which won't. More likely, there will be depth/development late-round picks here instead.
There may be some activity for a FA Tackle, and there is a possibility of Penn moving elsewhere as he's on the market. Penn is a solid player but not a lot of teams will view him as a starter, so he may yet stay here, albeit with more money.
ODDS: Low PROJECTED ROUND: Fourth to Seventh
OFFENSIVE GUARD
The best place the Bucs are solid. Unless I'm missing something from what I'm watching. Joseph and Sears are solid starters, and could well make Pro Bowl visits an ongoing habit. Like the OT spot, the Bucs should only be thinking about depth drafting here, and they should (injuries injuries injuries).
ODDS: Low PROJECTED ROUND: Fifth to Seventh
CENTER
The FA acquisition of Faine proved a smart move. I didn't see much wrong with his play. And one hopes he'll stay with the Bucs a good long while. The only question here is depth need (or will the Bucs keep training a back-up OG for duties here?).
ODDS: Low PROJECTED ROUND: Fifth to Seventh
DEFENSIVE TACKLE

The Bucs defensive collapse in December will remain one of the greatest regular season disasters in team history... well other than most of the 1980s. But still. The Bucs simply fell apart versus the run game: nobody was filling their gap duties up front, and opposing RBs were cutting into open space before the LBs could cover the gap(s). The loss of starters at DT due to injury is the culprit here: that and the lack of depth and talent. The Bucs have always had too few DTs to fill in, and now that's caught up to the team's performance.
With regards to FA, the market got a huge bounce up with reports of Tennessee's DT Haynesworth looking to test the market. A monster on the field, but there are questions about locker room attitude. Still, if he's available, and there's cap space aplenty, this should be a priority for the Bucs.
With regards to the draft, the scouts are not spotting a lot of up-front starters at the DT spot. It really does depend on FA here: if the Bucs don't get Haynesworth or anyone else of like caliber (ha!), they are going to have to use the First Rounder on a DT.
UPDATE: The Bucs did attempt to snag Haynesworth, but he's gone to Washington. And then the Titans filled their gap by signing Haye from us. While the Bucs re-signed Ryan Sims, it isn't the best move they can make: he didn't exactly impress during December's collapse... If FA continues like this, the Bucs are bound to use the First Rounder on a DT.

ODDS: High PROJECTED ROUND: First to Third
DEFENSIVE END
The DEs had a rough time of it past year. Kevin Carter was solid but not outstanding. Greg White changed his name to Stylez and somehow it cost him sacks. Adams slipped a bit his second year. One could argue that the DEs were having a rough go because of the slippage at the interior, but if sacks are down on a Cover-2 team that relies heavily on the front four to cause pressure, then the whole line needs a look-see. If the Bucs' evaluation of the line suggests a major overhaul is needed, look for the DT before DE. Unless, of course, there are no decent DTs left in which case a DE is going First or Second. For now, Third Round is the highest possible point to fill a spot.
UPDATE: Jason Taylor now available on the market, and the Bucs are rumored to be courting. He's close to Carter's age, but is more of an on-field demon than he is. Taylor's weakness is a lack of locker room presence and extra effort a'la Brooks: will he step up when he's called on?
ODDS: Medium PROJECTED ROUND: Third to Fifth
LINEBACKER
I had hoped, wanted Derrick Brooks to be able to leave the Bucs with some dignity, retire on good terms and all. His getting cut hurts like a kick to the gut: I know (everyone watching the Bucs knew) he was on the downturn of his career.
The cutting of Brooks, and also of Cato June, also means the Outside Linebacker position is up for grabs. Barrett Ruud has the middle spot locked up, so the question now is "Are Quincy Black and Adam Hayward up to the task?"
One thing that's happened with Brooks and June's removals is the realization the Bucs are going to shift away from Cover-2 schemes, so getting LBs in the mold of Derrick Brooks is not in the cards. If standard-type LBs are expected - run stoppers and blitzers - the Bucs could hold off into the middle rounds of the draft to secure some talent for development, and see if Black and Hayward are up to the job at hand. If this is a rebuilding year, the Bucs have (sadly enough) higher priorities on offense and the D-line.
ODDS: Medium PROJECTED ROUND: Third to Fifth
CORNERBACK
While the whole defense did a swan dive... well actually a massive belly flop during the month of December, the CB spot wasn't as bad as it all l... Okay, yeah, it was bad. Ronde Barber slipped far too many times, got burned too many times, and seriously needs to think about Safety or Nickel work from now on (part of me is surprised he survived the Brooks pushout). FA is most likely going to see Buchanon getting a lot of dough tossed at him to stay, and while rookie Talib didn't start a lot of times, he played well when he was on-field. Hopefully he'll be better for Year Two of his career.
There are too many other needs elsewhere for this to be a priority pick, but I'm wagering a low-round pick at CB is in the cards...
ODDS: Medium PROJECTED ROUND: Fourth to Sixth
SAFETY

Where did the Safeties go during the December debacle? I'm not too sure, and I'm not entirely sure if the talent is as good as it was two years ago. Newcomers Tanard Jackson and Sabby Piscitelli seem to have a lot to learn, but one hopes that improvements with the defensive line will help. It's also a question about the apparent shift of the defensive scheme away from Cover-2 sets, meaning the Safety positions might be asked to do something other than play deep in coverage. Until we can get a good idea what's going on with that, the Bucs ought to let the youngsters keep their spots this year, and should only consider drafting rookies for depth/special teams needs.

ODDS: Low PROJECTED ROUND: Sixth to Seventh
KICKER /PUNTER
You do not draft for a Kicker or Punter in this day and age. UFAs are cheap and easy to get, and very few teams waste a high pick here, not since the heady days of Gramatica and whassisname for the Raidahs.
ODDS: Nil PROJECTED ROUND: None
